Laptop mit ISTA+ zum Auslesen des BMW Fehlerspeichers

Read and clear BMW fault memory yourself with ISTA+

A warning light on the instrument cluster, a Check Control message, or a vehicle suddenly reacting differently – in many cases, this is caused by an entry in the fault memory. With ISTA+ Standalone, you can read this fault memory on your BMW or MINI yourself, view the error messages in plain text, and subsequently clear them. In this guide, we will show you step-by-step how this works.

What is the fault memory?

Every control unit in the vehicle – for example, engine, transmission, ABS/DSC, airbag, or lighting – constantly monitors its functions. If it detects a deviation, it saves a fault code in the fault memory. Further information is often saved along with it, such as mileage, date, or ambient conditions. ISTA+ reads these entries from all reachable control units and displays them clearly.

What do I need?

  • ISTA+ Standalone – for example, the current ISTA+ Standalone 4.61.40
  • Windows PC or laptop (64-bit) with sufficient storage space
  • Suitable diagnostic cable: ENET for F, G, and I models, K+DCAN for E models, or an ICOM interface
  • Recommended: a battery charger so that the voltage remains stable during diagnosis

You can find which version is intended for which series in our overview BMW ISTA versions for all model series.

Step by step: Reading the fault memory

  1. Connect cable: Connect the diagnostic cable to the OBD port in the footwell and to your laptop.
  2. Switch on ignition: Switch on the ignition (engine off). Connect a charger for longer diagnostic sessions.
  3. Start ISTA+: Open ISTA+ and select the vehicle management section or a new session.
  4. Identify vehicle: ISTA+ reads the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and automatically recognizes the vehicle.
  5. Perform vehicle test: Start the quick test or vehicle test. ISTA+ will now query all control units – this can take several minutes depending on the vehicle.
  6. View fault memory: In the Fault memory tab, you will see all entries with fault code, description, and affected control unit.

Are you unable to establish a connection? Then our article ISTA does not connect – checking ENET, K+DCAN & ICOM will help.

Clearing the fault memory

  1. Note down the faults or save the report before clearing anything.
  2. In the Fault memory tab, select the Clear fault memory function.
  3. Confirm the process. ISTA+ clears the entries in the control units.
  4. Switch the ignition off and on again briefly and read the fault memory once more.

Important: Clearing is not a repair

Clearing only removes the saved entry – not the root cause. If a component is actually defective, the fault will reappear after a short time. Sporadic faults, which may have been caused by low battery voltage for example, often remain gone permanently after clearing.

Typical faults when reading

  • Battery voltage too low: leads to interruptions and many "communication errors" – a charger prevents this.
  • Wrong cable: E models usually require K+DCAN, while F, G, and I models require ENET.
  • Ignition off: Many control units do not respond without the ignition switched on.
  • Firewall or network settings: often block the connection with ENET.

Frequently asked questions

Can I read all control units with ISTA+?
ISTA+ reads all control units that communicate with the vehicle. The exact scope depends on the vehicle model, year of manufacture, software version, and the diagnostic adapter used.

Will the fault return after clearing?
If the cause still exists, yes. In that case, the affected component should be checked.

Do I need an internet connection?
As a rule, an online connection to BMW is not required for reading and clearing the fault memory with ISTA+ Standalone.
