You want to customize functions on your BMW yourself and are looking for an easy-to-understand guide to coding with NCS Expert? NCS Expert is the classic BMW coding program for the E-Series. In this guide, we will show you how to set up NCS Expert, read the coding of a control unit, change the values, and write them back safely.
What is NCS Expert?
NCS Expert (Network Coding System) is a BMW program for coding control units. Depending on the vehicle and equipment, it can be used to customize comfort and display functions, such as lighting, locking, or instrument cluster settings. NCS Expert is part of the BMW Standard Tools and works together with EDIABAS and the SP data.
NCS Expert or E-Sys – which one do I need?
- NCS Expert: for the E-Series (e.g., E46, E60, E90)
- E-Sys: for the F-, G-, and I-Series
For pure diagnostics and reading error memory, use INPA or ISTA+. Find out more in our guide INPA Download & Installation 2026.
What do I need for coding?
- Windows PC or laptop with Windows 10 or 11
- BMW Standard Tools with NCS Expert, EDIABAS, and INPA
- Up-to-date SP data for your vehicle – see SP Data Update for WinKFP & NCS Expert
- K+DCAN cable (USB), correctly set up on COM1
- Battery charger – highly recommended to keep the voltage stable
Preparation: Load profile
- Start NCS Expert as administrator.
- Click on File → Load profile and select a profile in Expert Mode (e.g., "ExpertMode").
- Important: In the profile, the source for FSW/PSW must be set to "FSW_PSW.MAN" (manipulate) – otherwise, your changes will not be accepted during coding. Many people create a separate profile for this.
- Check that the K+DCAN cable is recognized and the ignition is switched on.
Coding with NCS Expert – step by step
- Read vehicle: Click on VIN/ZCS/FA and read the chassis number or vehicle order from a control unit (usually the CAS or LCM/FRM, depending on the model).
- Confirm series: Select the appropriate series if NCS Expert asks for it.
- Select control unit: Click on Select control unit and select the module you want to change.
- Read coding: Read the coding via the basic functions or the read job (depending on the version, e.g., CODIERDATEN_LESEN). NCS Expert saves the current coding as a file named FSW_PSW.TRC in the WORK folder (usually C:\NCSEXPER\WORK).
- Create backup: Copy the FSW_PSW.TRC and save it with the date in a safe place. This way, you can always revert.
- Change values: Open the file with a text editor, change the desired entries, and save it as FSW_PSW.MAN in the same folder.
- Write coding: Select the SG_CODIEREN job in NCS Expert and execute it. NCS Expert now accepts the values from the FSW_PSW.MAN.
- Check: Switch the ignition off and on again and test the function.
Tip: The entries in the coding file are usually German abbreviations. A translation tool like "NCS Dummy" helps you better understand the meaning of the parameters.
Important notes before coding
- Always create a backup first – do not write anything without a backup of the original coding.
- Change only one control unit at a time and test it afterwards. Each FSW_PSW.MAN is only valid for the control unit from which it was read.
- Stable voltage: A charger prevents interruptions during coding.
- No experiments on safety-relevant control units such as airbags, ABS/DSC, or steering.
- Not every function is possible on every vehicle – this depends on the model, year of manufacture, and equipment.
Typical errors and solutions
- "No connection" / IFH error: Check the COM port, EDIABAS setting, and ignition. See Fix INPA IFH-0009 error and No connection – check ENET, K+DCAN & ICOM.
- Change is not accepted: Check whether the file was really saved as FSW_PSW.MAN (not .MAN.txt) in the WORK folder, whether the source "FSW_PSW.MAN" is set in the profile, and whether you executed the SG_CODIEREN job.
- Control unit missing from the list: Often, the SP data is outdated or the wrong series is selected.
- NCS Expert does not start: start as administrator and add the folder as an exception in Windows Defender.
Frequently asked questions about NCS Expert
Does NCS Expert work on F and G models?
No. E-Sys is used for F-, G-, and I-models.
Can I break something with NCS Expert?
Incorrect values can disrupt functions. However, with a backup of the original coding, you can restore the previous state.
Do I need up-to-date SP data?
Yes, the SP data should match the vehicle. Outdated data often leads to missing control units or error messages.
Which cable do I need?
For the E-Series, a K+DCAN cable set up on COM1.
Note
Coding is carried out at your own risk. The range of functions depends on the vehicle model, year of manufacture, equipment, software version, and diagnostic adapter. We do not offer vehicle-specific advice or coding instructions for individual vehicles. You can optionally receive help with software installation via our paid remote support.
