BMW Service zurücksetzen mit ISTA+ nach Ölwechsel und Bremsen

Reset BMW service with ISTA+ – Oil, Brakes & Microfilter

Have you changed the oil yourself, installed new brake pads, or replaced the microfilter? If so, your BMW or MINI will continue to display “Service Due” – until the service is reset in the vehicle. With ISTA+ Standalone, you can handle this yourself in just a few minutes. In this guide, we explain how it works and what you should look out for.

What is CBS (Condition Based Service)?

Modern BMW and MINI vehicles do not calculate maintenance intervals based solely on fixed mileage, but rather on actual condition – this is known as Condition Based Service (CBS). The vehicle monitors items including engine oil, front and rear brake pads, brake fluid, microfilters, and spark plugs. After maintenance, the respective item must be reset so that the calculation starts again at 100%.

What do I need?

  • ISTA+ Standalone – for example, the current ISTA+ Standalone 4.61.40
  • Windows PC or laptop (64-bit)
  • Matching diagnostic cable: ENET for F, G, and I models, K+DCAN for E models, or an ICOM interface
  • Recommended: a battery charger for stable voltage

Step by Step: Resetting service with ISTA+

  1. Connect cable: Connect the diagnostic cable to the OBD port in the footwell and to your laptop.
  2. Switch on ignition: Ignition on, engine off.
  3. Start ISTA+ and identify vehicle: Create a new session and wait for the vehicle identification.
  4. Perform vehicle test: Run the quick test. This allows you to immediately see if there are any errors in the fault memory.
  5. Open service functions: In the Service functions area, select the item for Maintenance or CBS reset.
  6. Select service item: Choose the desired item, e.g., engine oil, front brake pads, rear brake pads, or microfilter.
  7. Reset: Follow the on-screen instructions and confirm the reset.
  8. Verify: Switch the ignition off and on again – the service item in the instrument cluster or iDrive should now be full again.

The exact names of the menu items may vary slightly depending on the ISTA version and the vehicle.

Important when changing brakes

For vehicles with an electronic parking brake, the parking brake must be moved to the service or assembly position before changing the rear brake pads. This can also be done via the service functions in ISTA+. If this step is skipped, the parking brake may be damaged. Work on the braking system should only be carried out with appropriate technical knowledge.

Typical errors

  • Service reset too early: Only reset an item once the maintenance has actually been performed.
  • Wrong service item: Front and rear brakes are counted separately – select exactly the item you have serviced.
  • No connection: You can find help for this in our article ISTA not connecting – checking ENET, K+DCAN & ICOM.
  • Low battery voltage: can lead to interruptions – a charger helps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reset the service without ISTA+?
On many models, a reset is possible via the instrument cluster. However, with ISTA+, you can see all service items clearly and reset them individually as needed.

Is the service entered into the digital service history?
No. A reset with ISTA+ only resets the display in the vehicle. An entry in the BMW service history is only made by a BMW workshop.

Does this also work for MINI?
Yes, ISTA+ also supports MINI models. The scope of functions depends on the model, year of manufacture, software version, and diagnostic adapter.

Tip: Before resetting, also read out the fault memory – we show you how to do this in our guide Read and delete BMW fault memory yourself with ISTA+.
